Revamped with fresh color combinations, Pimpernel wallpapers and fabrics capture the distinct styling of William Morris' original, block printed pattern.
Pimpernel is one of William Morris' most famous designs. It was created in 1876 by William Morris as a wallpaper and named after the small pimpernel flowers rather than the large tulips entwined with scrolling willow leaves within the pattern. This piece is a clear example of the relationship Morris created between the design of wallpapers and fabrics, influenced by oriental models. Titled Pimpernel, it was created around 1876 and is an example of how the interest for Japanese design lead to the simplification of lines and colours. Only plants coming from the East were chosen or ones that would adapt to eastern style, comparatively austere, like chrysanthemums, jasmines or willow branches. Originally this design was block printed in distemper colours, by hand, on paper. Now it is available on non-woven, a high-quality material that is easy to install and to maintain.
